To celebrate Roald Dahl day, we want to give something to teachers and educators, who are preparing activities to mark the great achievements from the story telling genius. We have designed 16 fantastic activities, based around familiar stories. Some activities are suitable for EYFS/SEN and KS1 children, others are suitable for children in KS2. There are a range of exciting science experiments for a selection of characters from familiar stories, there is a crossword, a wordsearch and some revolting rhyme ideas. We have even included matching cards which can be played where two of the same need to be matched for younger learners, but then we have designed a higher level matching cards game, which takes a little more thinking about, matching 2 objects that relate to particular stories written by Roald Dahl. This is a gorgeous collection of resources to support teaching of traditional stories with a twist. This story is inspired by ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, but it has been changed to show children that certain parts of stories can be changed, to create their own versions. This activity includes differentiated comprehension activities aimed at Year 1 and Year 2 and SEN. There is also a sequencing activity included. The animated powerpoint presentation which is included helps to bring the story to life, thereby giving children a deeper understanding of the story.

This is a great bundle of comprehension activities for children who are not able to write legibly, but are able to read. In order to assess reading and comprehension skills we need to check their understanding. These activities are brilliant for doing just that. The activities encourage children read the story / instructions and then find the sentences/pictures to stick in the correct places to show the answers. Other sheets encourage looking at pictures or reading information to find clues and children can make a mark on the answers they believe to be correct. This is a truly gorgeous powerpoint presentation to support children in their sounding out and blending as part of the Phase 2 Letters and Sounds. These are great sheets which I have used with a range of learners, including learners with Special Educational Needs who were not able to write. They signed/verbalised their caption for an adult to write down word for word. A great assessment tool for all learners to show their level of understanding. Can also be used for children to write their own captions for EYFS, KS1 and KS2. A fabulous resource to inspire creative writing and thoughts.

This is a lovely activity for children with Special Educational Needs working below the national curriculum. There are illustrations and photographs of animals. The children can listen to the sounds of the animals which an adult can play on the computer or make the sounds themselves, the children can then point to the animal that would make that particular sound. Can also be used to encourage children to name the animals, or point to animals when prompted by name.

Create a high frequency word apple tree, or use the apples to provide a support for reading and spelling for individuals. Great for EYFS and children with SEN as well as KS1 learners.

A fantastic tried and tested activity. This has been used with learners with Special Educational Needs who struggled with the phonics phases.
